24 The Deep Dark in Dawson
The Deep Dark by Caitlind r.c. Brown & Wayne Garrett (2015)

Caitlind r.c. Brown & Wayne Garrett are Calgary-based artists working with diverse mediums and materials, ranging from artificial light to re-appropriated urban objects. Their practice combines divergent aesthetic and industrial backgrounds, resulting in transformative public sculptures and installations. Beckoning viewers with interactive contexts and novel materials, their projects invite strangers to share in experiential moments, prompting collaborative viewership. Using mass-produced objects as a reference to cities as an immeasurable quantity of materials, people, and situations, Brown & Garrett’s practice evokes the possibility of renewed understanding through a critical shift in perspective.

Brown & Garrett have been collaborating regularly since 2011 after working together through the Arbour Lake Sghool collective. Hailing from distinctive backgrounds, the duo leverages Garrett’s background as a formally trained musician (Mount Royal University) and Red Seal Machinist (SAIT) against Brown’s formal education as an artist (ACAD) and informal training as an arts administrator. While their collaboration began as an exploration of complementary opposites, they continue to find common ground through a shared interest in strange beauty.
